Sacha Backes is a Senior Investment Officer at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, mandated to provide financing and support to companies investing in frontier and emerging markets. In the mining sector, IFC can provide financing for activities across the project cycle, from equity for advanced exploration and studies, all the way to debt for project developments and expansions, as well as hybrid instruments for intermediate stages. Sacha has been with IFC for 10 years – three years in London focusing on business development for mining, and oil and gas, four years at IFC’s headquarter office in Washington DC focusing on mining and infrastructure transactions, and now three years in IFC’s office in Johannesburg office focusing on mining investments across Africa. Prior to joining IFC, Sacha worked in Laos for seven years where he launched and managed several rural infrastructure development projects. Sacha has a PhD in Physics from Cambridge University and an MBA from INSEAD.
