Stuart M. Olley is a senior partner and Head of the Gowling WLG’s Canadian Natural Resources Practice Group. He focuses on capital market transactions for both public and private enterprises, mergers & acquisitions, corporate governance and private equity. Stuart has worked for a number of issuers and underwriters on transactions in various industries including oil & gas and mining. He has extensive experience in both domestic and international financing and merger transactions, including transactions in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia. Stuart frequently advises boards and special committees on best practices in corporate governance both in special situations and regular corporate operations. Stuart is a past member of the Securities Advisory Council of the Alberta Securities Commission. He holds a LLM (Securities) and certificate in Mining Law from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, a LLB and MBA from the University of Alberta, and a BA from the University of Toronto. Stuart has been recognized in The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory, The Best Lawyers™ in Canada and the Legal 500 Canada. In 2018 and 2019 he was named an “Acritas Star” and in 2020 he was recognized by Best Lawyers™ Canada as “Lawyer of the Year for Mining Law – Alberta”.
