Tim graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Engineering. He then completed a Master’s Degree in Management Science at the Sloane School MIT in the United States. Tim Guinness has over 35 years’ investment experience. He was appointed Managing Director of Guinness Mahon’s investment activity in 1980. He then founded Guinness Flight Global Asset Management Ltd in 1987 and was joint CEO from 1987 to 1999. Investec acquired Guinness Flight in 1998. He remained as Chairman of the company during the transition into Investec and started running an energy fund.
In 2003, he became the founder and Chief Investment Officer of Guinness Asset Management and Guinness Atkinson Asset Management active in London and Los Angeles. In the period 1998 to 2008 he built up the energy fund he was running from $3m to $2bn. In 2008 Investec, who were his largest client, took the money in-house and he had to start again. His firm now runs about $2.2bn.
Tim has written about the supply and demand in the energy world for nearly two decades covering both hydrocarbon fuels and renewables. More recently he has expanded his focus to embrace the implications of the potential coming transition of transportation to autonomous and electric vehicles.
