Botala Energy’s mission is to enable a successful, secure, and sustainable energy future for Botswana and unlock new economic opportunities. Established in 2018 Botala is currently exploring and developing; the Serowe Gas Project and Solar Opportunities within Botswana. Current operations are centralised around the Serowe coal bed methane (CBM) project with the potential for more exciting opportunities in the future within renewable energies including solar panel manufacturing in partnership with Solar Finland.

Botala’s development and growth will ideally have many positive social, environmental, and economical benefits for a wide range of stakeholders and shareholders. This includes increasing the supply and reliability of Botswana’s energy supply, reducing the cost of domestic electricity, reducing and ideally removing the need for Botswana to import external energy and creating a revenue stream through the export of cleaner electricity and sale of gas.

What do you see as the key risks and challenges facing your company at the moment and how are you overcoming these?

The key risk is exploration and appraisal of the gas field. Botala has drilled 11 wells over its 420,000 hectares of licence, there is still a lot to learn and understand about the field and the way the gas could be developed if the commercial pilot porgrammes are successful.

What do you think makes your company such a compelling investment?

Exploration to-date has reduced the exploration risk for CBM potential in the area. Serowe-3 has successfully produced and flared gas providing sufficient data to progress with the commercial pilot programme.

SASOL has announced the impending gas cliff for South Africa as it will shut-off gas supply in mid-2027. The market in South Africa is large and on the door-step of the Serowe Project. There has been significant interest in companies looking to diversify their gas sources.
